Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd. on Wednesday launched its 125cc bike SlingShot, targeted at the mass segment. The Indian subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation also announced an investment of Rs.500 crore to double its production capacity by 2012.
Priced at Rs.43,945 (ex-showroom Delhi), SlingShot was being positioned to fill the void that now existed between the 100cc and 150cc segments without compromising on the key parameters that a customer aspires for — style of a 150cc and the efficiency of a 100cc bike, Suzuki Motorcycle India Chairman Katsumi Takata told journalists here.
According to Suzuki Motorcycle India Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Atul Gupta, “our new offering is a complete package in terms of style, comfort, performance and practicality — all combined in a 125 cc bike.” The new bike is equipped with ‘pulsed-secondary air-injection (PAIR)' system that gives high combustion efficiency for enhanced mileage and reduced emissions. On future investments, Mr. Takata said: “we are aggressively expanding our production capacity to 5.40 lakh units from 2.50 lakh units by 2012. We have so far invested around Rs.450 crore this year and another Rs.50 crore will be invested in enhancing the capacity. The total investment will be around Rs.500 crore.”
He further pointed out that Suzuki would concentrate on new product development and strengthening of the distribution network.
The company has now 260 dealers across the country and it sold 1.80 lakh units in 2009-10, both scooters and motorcycles.
Referring to their sales, Mr. Gupta said out of the 5.40 lakh units, which would be produced annually by 2012, they expected 60 per cent of sales to come from scooters and 40 per cent from motorcycles.
“This year we aiming sales of 2.70 lakh units,” Mr. Gupta added.
